16.08.2007 - Today, Anand and Aronian played a four game match at the Chess Classic for the title of FiNet Chess960 Rapid World Champion, which finished only minutes before midnight. The rapid match was drawn after four exciting games and thus a two match blitz-tiebreak had to be played. Here Aronian had the better of it and won the blitz match 1,5:0,5 to become Chess960 World Champion. The match for third place between Etienne Bacrot was dominated by Bacrot who won 3:1.

16.08.2007 - Nach einem dramatischen Finale siegte Levon Aronian erst im Tiebreak. In der ersten Partie überschritt Anand überraschend die Zeit. Erst in der vierten Partie konnte er seinen Rückstand wettmachen. Anschließend mussten zwei Blitzpartien für die Entscheidung sorgen. Nachdem Anand in der ersten Partie fehlgriff, gelang es Aronian die sechste und letzte Partie des Abends Remis zu halten und damit seinen Titel im FiNet Chess960 World Championship erfolgreich zu verteidigen.
Das Match um den dritten Platz zwischen Etienne Bacrot und Rustam Kasimdzhanov endete mit 3-1 für den Franzosen.
16.08.2007 - Die zweitägige Veranstaltung hat mit fast 280 Teilnehmern einen neuerlichen Rekord erzielt. Insgesamt befinden sich 116 Titelträger im Feld. Der Gewinner qualifiziert sich für die nächstjährige FiNet Chess960 World Championship. Ein attraktives Ziel, dem alleine 59 Großmeister nachstreben. Drei Spieler haben nach dem ersten Tag noch eine weiße Weste. mehr
16.08.2007 - Defending Chess960 world champion Shredder and computer chess world champion Rybka will play the final of the 3rd Livingston Chess960 Computer Chess Tournament. Both programs scored 4 points. In the two games the programs played against each other the result was a draw, so we can expect an exciting final on Friday. The bronze medal will be at stake in the Spike vs. Jonny encounter. The Chess960 positions, played in the tournament were determined by rolling the Chess960 dice. Today, Vlastimil Hort, Gata Kamsky and Alexander Grishuk were responsible for the interesting starting positions. mehr
Chess Classic FiNet Chess960 Open: Record number of participants!
16.08.2007 - Today 280 chess enthusiasts came to the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz to play the 6th FiNet Chess960 Open tournament. On Thursday and Friday 11 rounds will be played. Top seed is Vassily Ivanchuk, closely followed by such formidable players like Mamedyarov, Shirov, Grishuk and Kamsky. Surpisingly Etienne Bacrot, the French star who also plays the rapid Chess960 world championship in the evening showed up to play the Open as well:” I love to play Chess960 and I have nothing else to do anyway…” Maybe he will be able to win the tournament again, like he did last year. 15.08.2007 - If you looked closely at the pictures from the first day of the FiNet Chess960 Rapid World Championship you may have discovered the tiger on stage and maybe wondered what it was doing there. A reminder that the Chess Classic Mainz are organized by the Chesstigers? A tribute to Vishy Anand, nine times winner of Mainz and nicknamed “Tiger of Madras”? Something to do with the children’s tournament? None of the above. Today a second tiger joined the first and it turned out that they simply count the number of tournament days. 15.08.2007 - Die Lokalmatadorin Anna Endress vom TSV Schott Mainz ist die Gewinnerin des ersten Mini-FiNet Opens. 35 Jugendliche unter 14 Jahren kämpften in der Rheingoldhalle um den Sieg im Chess960. Verlierer gab es keine, denn am Ende standen alle auf der Bühne und wurden mit einem Preis beschenkt. mehr
15.08.2007 - Computer chess world champion Rybka and Chess960 world champion Shredder started their double round-robin tournament with two other programs, Spike and Jonny in the lobby of the newly renovated Rheingoldhalle today. After three rounds on the first day, Shredder seems to be cruising towards the final on Friday. The program, developed by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen, scored 2,5 points today. The biggest surprise was the first round shock-victory of Spike, the first Chess960 Computer Chess World Champion over Rybka. mehr

14.08.2007 - Es war schon etwas Besonderes für die 108 Teilnehmer des 1. Ordix Mini-Opens. In der Mainzer Rheingoldhalle spielten sie wie die Großen. Die besten von Ihnen saßen auf der Bühne und ihre Partien konnten auf einer 3 x 3 Meter großen Leinwand im Foyer oder live im Internet von den Zuschauern bewundert werden. mehr

Traditionally, in Mainz the famous Queen-song signals the beginning of the round: The players go on stage, sit down to study the – this time unknown – position and the hall is darkened. The spectators fall silent to focus on the games shown on two huge screens towering above the stage. Those who look for some expert comment and do not trust the whispered comments by their friends put on their headphones to listen to the analyses of GM Artur Jussupow and GM Fabian Döttling. Or they just throw a glance on the two monitors in front of the stage, on which the computer program Spike reveals how he thinks, or rather calculates, the position should be evaluated. mehr
14.08.2007 - The winner of the first Mini Ordix Open is Constantin Göbel. He scored 5,5 points after six rounds. Ramil Babayev also score 5,5 points, but Göbel, from chessclub SC Ladja Rossdorf, had a slightly better Buchholz score. Best girls was local hero Anna Endress from Schott Mainz, she scored five points. Alexander Yusupov (yes, the son), Janek Elkman, ELO-favourite Joshua Hager, Slavik Sarchisov and Daniel Weber scored 5 points as well. The winners in the various categories received a nice trophy, but all players got a souvenir: the received a nice certificate. And Ordix already promised that they will sponsor the youth tournament again next year! mehr
14.08.2007 - After Monday’s opening press conference of the Chess Classic Mainz and the drawing of lots, Vassily Ivanchuk, currently number four on the world’s ranking list, gave a 40-board simul. Right from the start of the world’s greatest rapid chess festival such simuls have been part of the program.

Chess Classic More than 100 talents play the Mini-Ordix!
14.08.2007 - Lots of nervous children in the Rheingoldhalle today, and even more nervous parents and trainers bustle about because we see a premiere in Mainz: for the first time the Mini-Ordix Open is played. More than 100 young talents Under-14 play in an open group, exactly like the well-known "Big" Ordix Open. Organiser Hans-Walter Schmitt: “The youngsters will get the opportunity to play on a big stage to get the electrifying feeling, what it is like to play in the spotlight. And in the foreseeable future we want to bring out a German World Champion”. The young talents play six rounds today. On Wednesday the first Mini FiNet Open will be played, in which the children play Chess960.
14.08.2007 - Mit der traditionellen Simultanveranstaltung, die seit Beginn der Veranstaltung zum Programm gehört, hat das schachliche Treiben der Chess Classic seinen Anfang genommen. Der Weltranglistenvierte Vassily Ivanchuk gewann 35 Partien, vier endeten Remis und nur einem Gegner musste er sich geschlagen geben. mehr
